2014 Girls' Camp Ideas! :D

GIRLS' CAMP!
I just got called as YCL and I am pumped and humbled all at once! Here are some cute camp ideas I found online; some of them are general and some of them are geared to my stake's theme of "Come Unto Christ".
Watch the 15-in-5 video for ideas. This is a 5 minute video with 15 ideas for girls' camp. (I made it myself. hehe :D)
http://screencast.com/t/FE4NFV7ut

Here are the resources I promised in the video:

  • CANDY BAR MEN ACTIVITY LINK
  • SCRIPTURE CARD EXAMPLES BELOW
  •  LOST & FOUND BUCKET LABEL

  • GRATITUDE POSTER LABEL
Scripture Cards (or PJS Patterns) EXAMPLES
**Scripture cards are a way to do PJS. You hand out a card like this every day for PJS as an option for the Young Women to study during PJS time. One way to do scripture cards is to base them off of the girls’ camp theme. Here are a few examples you can feel free to use. **
Day One PJS: Virtue
“Sometimes as we walk life’s paths, we want to loiter in dangerous places, thinking that it is fun and thrilling and that we are in control. Sometimes we think we can live on the edge and still maintain our virtue. But that is a risky place to be. As the Prophet Joseph Smith told us, “Happiness is the object and design of our existence; and will be the end thereof, if we pursue the path that leads to it; and this path is virtue” (History of the Church, 5:134–35).” – Sister Elaine S. Dalton, Cherish Virtue, March 2009 New Era.
Read and ponder the following scriptures. Take notes in your journal or in the margin. Jot down some commitments you will make in order to stay virtuous. Ask yourself why virtue is so important and write your response as well.
*      Doctrine & Covenants 25: 2 & 13
*      Doctrine & Covenants 121: 45-46
*      Article of Faith 13
*      Proverbs 3:15
*      Moroni 9:9
*      Revelation 3:4

Day Two PJS: Come Unto Christ
“The words ‘come unto Christ’ are an invitation. It is the most important invitation you could ever offer to another person. It is the most important invitation anyone could accept.” —President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency
As you ponder the quote above and the scriptures listed below, take time to write a few goals you have to become more Christlike and to “come unto Christ”. Why is it so important to come unto Christ? What are ways you can come unto Christ? What are some sins that keep you from coming to Christ? What do you have to sacrifice when you come to Christ, and what do you gain from doing so?
o   Moroni 10:30-33
o   D&C 20:59
o   Omni 1:26
o   Jacob 1:27

I love Britt Nicole.  This is her song "Headphones", and to me it just says that even when the world is screaming words of hatred at you, just plug in your "spiritual headphones" and listen to God's love.  Headphones Video

You Don't Need

You Don't Need

You look in the mirror
to see your reflection,
Trying to add another trophy
To your worldly collection.
But don't you know,
Don't you see
As a daughter of God
You are clothed in emaculate beauty??

You don't need a crown to make
Your divinity any more real.
You don't need some jerk of a man
To tell you how to feel.
You don't need a pocket full of gold
Or the perfect skin,
To achieve the potential
That you have within!
Ya, you don't need.

You walk down the street,
Strutting your stuff.
Cuz the truth is
that you don't feel you're enough.
You think you need him or her
To be respected and adored.
But the truth, is girl,
You are loved way more!

You don't need a crown to make
Your divinity any more real.
You don't need some jerk of a man
To tell you how to feel.
You don't need a pocket full of gold
Or the perfect skin,
To achieve the potential
That you have within!
Ya, you don't need.

And when you've had enough
When you collapse to your knees,
Saying you'll never measure up,
Asking, "Father, please."
You ask for the world
But don't you see?
You're asking for things
that you don't need!

You don't need a crown to make
Your divinity any more real.
You don't need some jerk of a man
To tell you how to feel.
You don't need a pocket full of gold
Or the perfect skin,
To achieve the potential
That you have within!
Ya, you don't need.

Emailing

Hey folks!
I know I have not posted in...forever.  :)  Studying and life is fun (I know...lame excuse.)
Anyway, so I've been getting these emails about "blog content" from random people, and they show up my spam box.  Ugh... so I don't open them.  If you have something to add to the blog, I ask you to please comment....cuz I'm too superstitious to click on a spam mail.
  Moral of the story: comment

Get away from it all: Relieving Stress and Finding Peace

Hi ladies/gents/or whoever decides to read this!
As we're sinking into the school year, emerging ourselves in homework, and starting up our extracurricular activities, I thought I'd post a few ways on how to get away from it all.
Though it is important to do all of the things mentioned above, there are times that we need to be alone  We all need time to just relax, clear our minds, or talk to God.  So here are a few ways to relax, improve your stress-management, and get away from it all.  Here is a good resource (and one of my main ones) where you can get more info: http://www.webmd.com/balance/guide/blissing-out-10-relaxation-techniques-reduce-stress-spot

1. Take a walk:  I know this is super elementary, but walking really does help.  You could even bike, longboard, ripstick...whatever.  Just get out and move your muscles at a comfortable, non-stressful pace, and think.  Go to nature. Watch the kids play in their front yards as you pass by.  Think about what is really important in life.

2. Use repetition:  Do something that is repetitive, something you can loose yourself in. webmd.com suggests walking (like mentioned before), painting, swimming, knitting. Do something that is freelance, relaxing, and not stressful. When you swim, don't do it for time.  When you knit, don't do it for product.  When you walk, don't do it for distance.  The point of relaxation is not the destination, but the journey.

3. Eat stress-reducing foods: By this I do not mean stress meds.  I mean foods that will help you both concentrate and rejuvenate, stay healthy and stay focused.  Healthy food can help reduce stress (wow...big surprise right?  Always thought it was ice cream.)  Though some suggest sugar-packed, fatty foods, here are a few suggestions that comply with the Flame style.
  •    Oranges: Oranges have a lot of vitamin C, which has been shown to help curve stress.  militarytocivilianfitness.com
  • Spinach: I know...most of you are like "eww...Popeye...gross," but spinach is actually really good for you.  It contains magnesium, which a lack of may result in headaches or fatigue.worldcommunitycookbook.com
Here are a few cooking suggestions.
  • Avocados: These green babies contain a lot of potassium, which helps to reduce your blood pressure.  (ah-hah!!)  Put them on a salad, in a salsa, in guacamole...smother it on your face, whatever.
 sunset.com
  • Raw vegetables: Raw veggies are basically the cure for everything.  Eat lots of them!  A few good ways to eat them is a salad, dipping them in an organic salad dressing, or smothering peanut butter on them.  Dig in and enjoy!

4. Tap Chakras and Meditate:  If there is something bugging you, or if you just need a little time out, try tapping your chakras and meditating. Below, I have a picture from blisslotus.com of the chakra points.  Chakras usually can be tapped in several different places.  This is how I like to do it:
  • Meditate: Sit down, nice and straight.  Back straight, shoulders relaxed, hands on your knees.  At my school, we do this for a minute every class period, and our motto is: Eyes closed, mouth closed, mind opened.  I want you to do the same thing.  Take deep breaths and clear your mind.  Focus on the tasks you are preparing for.  **I recommend meditating for at least a few minutes every day.  My headmaster suggests doing it in the morning.**
  • Chakra Tapping: http://www.balanced-energy.com/a_bit_about_chakras.htm is a good place to go to learn about chakras.  It's kind of hard to explain it over the computer, so I would suggest finding someone who does reflexology, energy healing, or Reiki to help you. It really does help, and I do it all the time to resolve issues.  I talk to myself while I do it, so it is really refreshing and rejuvenating.  I know this sounds super hippy, but my mom does Reiki and I have some amazing older friends who work with energy, and it really does work!

5. Fast, pray, and study:  When it feels like the world is getting to be too much for you (and even when it is not), I highly recommend the above three things.
Fast: For those of you who are unfamiliar with fasting, here's a brief definition.  Fasting (like when Jesus fasted for 40 days) is when you go without food or drink for a designated amount of meals.  I would suggest starting out small for first timers.  You start out your fast with a prayer, and end it with a prayer, telling God your reasons for fasting.  I suggest doing this on Sunday if possible.
Pray: I strongly invite you to pray.  Prayer is a way of sorting your thoughts, speaking to God, and finding answers.  It is one of the only resources you will always have and that will always be useful. Pray for guidance, for strength, and for understanding.
Study: Study the scriptures. They contain great words of wisdom.  "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for docrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness - that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." -2nd Timothy 3: 16-17

6. Seminary:  Many of you have heard of seminary, and some of you haven't.  But I promise it is one of the most inspirational places in the world.  In my state, we are blessed to have it offered as
a released-time school class, and as early morning classes.  It is where you are taught by wise men or women who have studied and searched the scriptures.  They have amazing insight!  It is so wonderful. :)  I encourage all of you to go, LDS or not, especially since this year is New Testament Studies (2012-2013) and is so amazing!! It is truly a place of peace and strength. http://seminary.lds.org/?lang=eng

7. The Temple: For those of you with current temple recommends, go to the temple frequently!  It is a place of inspiration and peace!  If you don't have a recommend, get one.  It will change your life.  Pinky promise.

Developing Habits...

We've all heard of developing bad habits, addictions, and customs.  But how do we develop good ones?
It appears it is always easier to develop a bad habit than it is to form a good one.
In this article, I'm going to write about a few ways you can develop good, positive, lifelong habits.  Let me know what you think. Comments, insights, and testimonies are appreciated.  As a few resources for this article, I used: http://www.motivationalwellbeing.com/developing-habits.html  and http://www.lds.org/callings/relief-society/leader-resources/new-relief-society-sisters/pursuit-of-excellence?lang=eng
Ways to Help You Develop Good Habits
Before I start anything else, I'd like to define "habits."  A habit means (according to Encarta Dictionary): A regularly repeated behavior pattern or addiction.  I personally like to think of a habit as the result of a commitment.  A commitment is a devotion or dedication.  So, this is a elongated Flame definition of a habit:
A regularly repeated behavior pattern which is the result of a previously made devotion or dedication.
When it comes to habits, you can't just set a goal.  A goal is something you are simply shooting for.  A commitment is a promise, a devotion, or a dedication.  So, when you start off to make your new habit, make sure you commit to it.

1. Identify what qualifies as a good habit and which ones you'd like to develop...
The first key to developing good habits is identifying what habits are good and which ones you'd like to become nice and familiar with.
So, I'm going to make a brief list of habits you may consider developing:
  • Serve others daily.  This is something I call SASS: Secret Act of Silent Service.
  • Exercise daily.
  • Pray daily.
  • Study your scriptures/Core Book daily.
  • Go to bed early.
  • Wake up early.
  • Using good table manners.

Really there are so many habits you could develop.  Make sure you identify which ones you'd like to develop.
How do you identify a good habit?
Well, it's quite simple:
-Identify: What does it do for you?  And what does it do to you?
-Identify: Does this make you a better person?  Does this help you progress?
Identify: WHY do I want to develop this habit?

2. Make a clear goal/commitment and make sure your habit is not a goal.
Be precise in what you want.
-I want to be to bed @ 9:00.
-I want to exercise for 30 minutes daily.
-I want to always say please and thank you.
Make sure that your "habit" is repeatable.  There's a difference between just a goal and a habit.
A goal is something you may attain once or twice.  A habit is something you want to attain over and over again.
Goal: I want to loose five pounds in one month.
Well, that's a great goal!  But if you want to make that a habit, you'll be overly skinny and sickly in a while.
Habit: I commit to exercising 30 minutes every day.
That's great!  You can do that every day.  It will help you to become a better, fitter person, it is a clear goal, and it is attainable (which we'll talk about in a minute.)
Remember, you habit must first start with a commitment: I commit to reading my scriptures 20 minutes every morning.  I commit to practicing piano for 30 minutes every night.
Once your habitual commitment is clear, precise, and for sure committed, then you are set to go.

3. Make sure your habit is attainable.
Make sure your habit is something you can do.  No making a commitment to habit to climb Mount Everest every morning before breakfast.  Uh-uh.  Not happening.
Attainable?  Yes, attainable.  Make sure you can accomplish this habit.  That doesn't mean make your habit commitment easy.  You want to stretch and challenge yourself!  But make sure you are realistic.
A realistic, attainable, but yet challenging habit will be one you really want to work for.
I really want to gain the habit of stretching for 15 minutes before school each day.
Is that attainable?  Yes.
Is it practical?  Yes.
Is it a habit, not a goal? Yes.
Will it challenge me?  Yes.

4. Make sure your habit STAYS habit.
Once you gain a good habit, you don't want to let it go.  Though it takes some time to create a habit, you can easily disturb your habitual routine.  Despite how hard it may be to wake up and exercise before school; despite how tired you are before you go to bed - you can't let go of your habit.  Keep exercising.  Keep brushing your teeth.  Keep studying. Don't let one measly moment disturb a lifetime (or even a couple years' worth) of habit!  You will regret it!

So, to sum it up!
1.  Identify the habit you want to develop, why you want to develop it, and if it is a good habit.
2. Make your habit clear.
3. Make sure your habit is repeatable and is not just a goal.  It is a lifetime of COMMITMENT!
4. Make sure it is attainable AND challenging.
5. Keep that habit. :)
